Review and Giveaway: Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna

At Atlantic Station till November 30

By Diana Cole Sandy Springs Dunwoody Macaroni Kid Publisher and Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna October 15, 2014
Recently, I went to see Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna at Atlantic Station.   I was given tickets to the show, in exchange for this review.  My opinions are my own though.
“Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon.
Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.
In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony. “

Amaluna means mother and moon.  When the Cirque creators started to create Amaluna over two years ago, they wanted a show that focused the strength and beauty of woman.    This cast is 70% woman and the live band is 100 % Woman.

After the show, I was invited to attend a Question and Answer segment.   These are some of the facts I learned.   There are over 1000 costumes and accessories that Cirque uses for one show alone.   It takes over 40 hours of doing laundry, steaming, and alterations.   The cast consists of over 17 Nations.    The cast learn how to put on their makeup.
When they travel, they are self-sustained.  They bring all of their supplies, and workers.  Th   Cirque find their new talent by 1) Word of mouth 2) Social Media especially YouTube 3) Generational 4) Talent Scouts and 5) NCAA.  The Gymnasts in the show create their own act.
In Amaluna, a water bowl is featured.   It is filtered like a swimming pool and it takes 4 hours to fill. It is precisely at 98 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is to ensure it is the perfect temperature for the performers.   Since the pool is extremely heavy.  It hardly leaves the stage.   It is part of the landscape.
Now for the review.  I have never been to a Cirque.   All I can say is WOW, Amazing.  It’s a feast for your eyes.  You do not know where to look.   Cast dropping from the ceiling, yup.   Cast coming from the audience, have that too.  Cast in the water bowl, that too.   The costumes, are magnificent. The colors are amazing.   The accessories like the wings are stunning.   There are a few acts that I will mention: the uneven bars.   I later found out these are NCAA gymnasts.   They did some amazing feats on the bars.  The Cerceau and Waterbowl.  The contortions that she does was astonishing.  My favorite was the Chinese Pole.  He made it look so simple.   I would defitenly go to Amaluna.
