I was recently given two tickets to view the new production Mother Goose at Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. This review expresses my personal opinions.
Mother Goose is adapted and directed by Amy Sweeney and was performed with Rod, Hand-and-Rod, and puppets. The show incorporates the themes of rhyming, counting, sorting, and problem-solving.
Mother Goose is on the loose and the audience is invited to help Mary Mary look for clues to find her. My daughter and I really enjoyed having a "narrator" (Mary Mary). She helped the audience truly feel apart of the show. With Mother Goose missing the citizens of Rhymeville have their rhymes mixed up.
Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Peep, Jack & Jill, Hey Diddle, Diddle, The Little Old Lady Who Lives in a Shoe and others need help remembering their rhymes.
The show is filled with music and I thoroughly enjoyed watching and hearing the children in the audience sing, clap and yell with excitement. One of our favorite parts of the show is when the puppeteers come out and show how some of the different puppets work. This show is great for little ones as young as 2. This create-a-puppet workshop was a huge hit. We made a cow jumping over the moon rod puppet and performed it on one of the classroom stages. If time is short and you don't have time for the create-a-puppet workshop you can stop at the box office and pick up a kit to take home.
A sensory-friendly performance of the show will take place August 27, continuing the Center's mission of providing programming for patrons with ASD.
You can come 30 minutes before performances to enjoy pre-show activities including hearing some your favorite nursery rhyme and coloring a special puppet that you can use during the show! Preshow activities are free of charge.
Mother Goose runs at Center For Puppetry Arts through September 17. Show times are Thursday and Friday 10 am and 11:30 am, Saturday 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm and Sunday 1 pm and 3 pm The Center is located at 1404 Spring Street NW at 18th Atlanta, GA 30309. Tickets are $19.50 (non-members) and $9.75 (members) (included is admission to the show, the museum, and the create-a-puppet workshop) and every person ages 2 & up require a ticket.
