Spruill Center for the Arts Plans to reopen camps and classes June 22

By Spruill Center for the Arts May 28, 2020

The Spruill Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the reopening of classes and camps on June 22.

Based on guidance from the CDCGeorgia Department of Healthand the Governor’s office, and with input from staff, instructors, and students this decision was made with a long-term view of the organization and the extended Spruill family of instructors and students.

Opening on June 22 allows the center additional time to garner best practices established by health and community organizations and take the necessary preventative measures to ensure a safe, healthy, fun and creative environment. Similarly, the Spruill Gallery will reopen on June 9th, Tuesday through Thursday and by appointment.

The gallery’s next show, the Student & Faculty “Artists in Residence” juried exhibition, will begin virtually on June 11, and then transition on a limited basis to the gallery itself later in the summer.

During the period when the center was closed, the Spruill Center for the Arts staff formalized the policies and procedures that would need to be in place prior to opening and stockpiled the necessary cleaning supplies and equipment to operate the center again.  When the center reopens, a number of additional safety precautions and operating protocols will be in place such as a decrease in the number of students per classroom and an increased cleaning of shared equipment and classroom space.

The impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the arts sector has been catastrophic. Employment in the sector is down 54.5% nationwide, 62% of artists are fully unemployed, and there has been a cumulative loss of $5.5 billion to arts and culture organizations. Despite this gloomy forecast, the Spruill Center for the Arts has maintained its entire staff during the shutdown and also financially supported nearly 50 independent contractor instructors who primarily depend on the center for their livelihood. During the same time, every refund request made by students and campers were fully honored.

The financial impact of these decisions has led to innovations at the center including the much-lauded virtual series of artist demonstrations through the Coffee Break with Spruill and High Tea programs. The center has used this time to make facility improvements in classrooms, with equipment, and in shared common areas such as the courtyard plaza that will be cleaned and repainted in partnership with the City of Dunwoody. The center is also at the beginning of a revamped membership campaign with added features and benefits for both new and renewing supporters. All of these measures help to keep the community connected through the arts.

The board, staff, and dedicated team of instructors eagerly await the return of students and campers; and to hear the sounds of creativity and community ringing through the hallways once again. As artist Mo Willems so accurately noted recently on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “Science is going to get us out of this, but Art is going to get us through this.” The Spruill Center for the Arts wholeheartedly agrees.
