The Little Pirate Mermaid & Summer Camp at Center for Puppetry Arts

Shows Start June 29 Thru Aug 7

March 15, 2022

The Center for Puppetry Arts welcomes you to experience new museum programming, workshops, and special events this winter and spring season.

The final production in the Family Series is Pete the Cat. Based on the New York Times best-selling book series by native Georgian, James Dean, the Center’s original production creates a day in the life of Pete and his friends from several Pete the Cat books. Reduced-priced preview performances are available on April 5.

Create-A-Puppet Workshop™: Pete the Cat Hand Puppet

The Center’s online platform, Digital Learning, is continuing to expand its programming to include families and individuals who cannot come to the Center. On the second Saturday of every month, the digital team presents Online Puppet Playdates. Each playdate is live, interactive and available to anyone, anywhere with an internet connection.

STEM Adventure Days are back this season on April 24 (Pete the Cat). Join us for an afternoon of STEM magic with a puppet show, a special Museum tour, a customized Create-A-Puppet Workshop™, and a unique post-show presentation that connects all areas of the Center with areas of curriculum and learning. Opening on April 8 for 3 performances only - the extraordinary, critically acclaimed production of Chimpanzee by Nick Lehane takes the stage. New York Magazine calls it a “gorgeous puppet play…a meticulous, deeply felt nonverbal memory play." This adult-only performance is based on true stories of chimpanzees raised as children in human homes in a series of cross-fostering experiments. What becomes of them as they grow or funding for research dries up?

Closing the performance season will be the return of Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT) on May 12. The Center’s annual experimental puppetry theater program, now in its 36th year, supports new puppetry works for adult audiences. The all-inclusive Family Series performance ticket includes 3 activities: the performance, the Worlds of Puppetry Museum and the Create-A-Puppet Workshop™. In the workshop, guests are invited to build, decorate and perform with their own puppet on the Center’s classroom stage.

Sensory-Friendly Sundays are also included in our winter and spring performance series. Guests with sensory sensitivities (such as Autism Spectrum Disorder) and other developmental differences are invited to experience the Center in a comfortable and judgment-free setting, supported by trained and experienced staff members. Each component of the Center’s programming is modified to reduce sensory stimuli including adjusted lights and sound, freedom for children to talk or leave their seats, and a quiet zone in the lobby.
In the coming weeks, the Center will be announcing winter and spring programming in the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, Explore Puppetry Workshops for adults, and special events.
