The Bert Show's Big Thank You

Here's Your Chance to Say "Thank You" to the Troops this Thanksgiving.

By Erin Stolle Macaroni KId Publisher Alpharetta-Roswell-Milton October 17, 2013

I learned about Bert's Big Thank You last year and absolutely loved the idea. What is it? It's a letter writing campaign with the goal of making sure every single deployed soldier receives a letter on Thanksgiving Day.

Following are the details from The Bert Show website. Will you sit down with your kids and write a letter? It doesn't have to be long. In fact, they say the 1-2 sentence letters from the kids are the most touching. I urge you to give it a shot and help make a difference in the lives of those that sacrifice so much for us.

Taken from The Bert Show website:

Every single military member stationed outside the United States deserves to receive a letter of gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. We want to give our troops a “Big Thank You” with a little taste of home this Thanksgiving, but we need your help! How? It’s as simple as writing a Thank You letter.

In 2007, 375,000 letters to troops all over the world were successfully sent. In 2011, The Bert Show community helped to express a BIG THANK YOU with over 405,000 letters! This year our goal is the same, to provide a letter of appreciation to each service member stationed outside the United States. We can only do this with your help. Let’s pull together to make this project a success!

Get a letter writing campaign started. We want everyone in your school, church, civic group, sorority/ fraternity, office, or neighborhood to write letters. Give our troops that much deserved show of appreciation by writing a thank you letter.

Writing Guidelines:

Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. We reserve the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

  • All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.
  • Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.
  • NO construction paper.
  • Decorate using crayons, markers, pens or pencils.
  • Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.
  • Do not send greeting cards or photographs.
  • Feel free to include your mailing and email address.
  • Individual letters should not be sealed in envelopes.
  • Do not send anything except letters.

(We cannot accept donations of any kind, and they should not be included or attached to letters.)

Letter Deadline:

All letters must be received NO LATER than Nov. 1, 2013! That's when the station must have them, so please take that into account if mailing the letter.

Below is what my son wrote last year. It makes me smile every time I look at it. I plan to do this with both of my boys this year. I hope you will, too.

Have a wonderful week,
