MK REVIEW: THE LION KING AT THE FOX THEATRE

By Becky Samford, MK Publisher, Duluth, Norcross, Johns Creek & Peachtree Corners April 18, 2014
I took my seat, the lights dimmed, the Zulu call went forth to summons the animals and then the breath-taking pageantry began.  From the back of the theatre,  as the African drums beat, they slowly walked toward the stage... the most amazing creatures I've ever seen. Giraffes consisting of a man with 6-foot stilts on his legs and two longer poles extending from his arms, graceful leopards, leaping antelopes, an elephant so large it contains 4 men, strutting zebras filled the aisles as the air above fluttered with flying birds all moving toward Pride Rock to meet the new lion prince, Simba.
The actors are all incredibly talented, especially the 10 year olds who play young Simba and young Nala. Everything is superlative, from the music written by Elton John and Tim Rice and the choreography to the costumes, lighting, special effects and sets. It's no wonder that this show has won so many accolades. THE LION KING won six 1998 Tony® Awards:  Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan) and Best Direction of a Musical along with the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design among others.
In its 17th year, THE LION KING is the highest-grossing Broadway show in New York history and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world.  Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, it has been seen by more than 70 million people.  Translated into eight different languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese), productions of THE LION KING have played 18 countries on every continent except Antarctica.
Grossing in excess of $5 billion, the stage production of THE LION KING has already earned more than the biggest hit films in movie history: more than the Lord of the Rings trilogy combined, more than the six Star Wars films combined, and more than Avatar and Titanic, the two highest-grossing films in movie history, combined.

There is no other show like THE LION KING. If you were only going to see one Broadway show in your whole life, this is the one you want to see! It's an experience that you will never forget!
