The world of alternative health has continued to grow with mainstream broadcasts of nutrition, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and most specifically chiropractic! The benefits of chiropractic are increasingly becoming a topic among the dinner table as its benefits for any age (from infants to elderly). So what are some questions to ask your family chiropractor?

  1. When is a good time to visit a chiropractor? Anytime! In fact, as early as possible. According to the most recent research discussed on www.icpa4kids.org and from Dr. Claudia Anrig, a certified prenatal and pediatric chiropractor with a wealth of knowledge, the prime window of opportunity to positively impact the health of the future generation lies within their first 5 years of life. Any propensity towards abnormal development or any negative response to accumulated stress over the first 5 years of life (such as birthing, falling, and broken bones) could lead to more sinister problems immediately or in the future.
  2. What does it look like to adjust a child? An adjustment is the chiropractic term for re-alignment of the spine. For children, the force is so much lower and never involves rotation of the spine until those elements that prevent over-rotation are developed at around age 8. Children absolutely love getting adjusted. Many times they are sleeping, or busy playing with Dr. Sam that they don’t notice what is going on. It’s absolute fun! Most times, the infant is held by the parent while getting adjusted. As they get older, we introduce them to the table. Infants are usually adjusted with the 5th digit, or a lower force technique. As such, the amount of pressure felt as the 5th digit contacts the eyes without negatively impacting the iris is typically what is entertained.
  3. What techniques are used? There are several techniques that could be safely used with children depending on the circumstance. This would include Activator, Sacro-Occipital, and Cranial Techniques. These techniques are examples of low-force but effective tools or methods to safely adjust children that are used in my practice.
  4. What are some benefits that have been reported for children under chiropractic care? Direct improvement is at times hard to measure as symptoms change, but in children we tend to see a quicker turnaround. Proper latch, easier breastfeeding, less colicky symptoms, better sleep, improved digestion, improved sinus/allergies/asthma, decreased body/growing pains, scoliosis/posture improvement, decreased menstrual cramping, better focus, lessened ADHD/Autistic symptoms, and many more have been anecdotally and peer-reviewed published.
