I was recently given four tickets to visit the new exhibit Blue Man Group- Making Waves at the Children's Museum of Atlanta. This review expresses my personal opinions.
The Blue Man Group- Making Waves is a national touring exhibit. The exhibit is a multisensory exploration of sound and features six interactive stations.
We really liked how the lighting was subdued in the exhibit area. The journey into the science of sound begins with the entry tube. The kiddos enjoyed climbing through the tube with the directional lights and the tubes beating out a rhythm. Next was the wall that depicted members of the Blue Man Group moving in time to the music, this was the "introduction area" of the exhibit.
The first station was the tube phones. This was my children's favorite in the exhibit. These phones use your own voice to show how voices can be changed using echo, distortion, and reverb. In the Seeing Sound area, we got to explore what sound might look like by playing the Theremin. An oscilloscope shows the patterns that can result from changes in sound. My group enjoyed trying to make the pattern change quickly. We then went to the Build-u-lum where we used pieces of PVC tubes to create instruments and play a real song. We were amazed at the many different sounds that could be made using a PVC tube.
We then explored pitch in the Slide-u-lum. Here we slid sections of pipe into longer or shorter sections to get the pitch we liked. My son tried to find the highest pitch sound he could make. Next, we explored the Sand Drum area. We were able to see how sound vibrations make patterns in sand on a drum head. This was a very popular part of the exhibit and we spent the most time at it.
The final stop of the exhibit is the surround sound theater for a show combining high technology with Blue Man Group performers. The show illustrates all the different aspects of sound explored throughout the exhibit.
The Blue Man Group- Making Waves exhibit is a great experience. It is appealing to a broad range of ages and abilities. The exhibit will be at the Children's Museum of Atlanta until September 4, 2017. The museum is located at 275 Centennial Olympic Park Dr., Northwest Atlanta, GA 30313 The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturday and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is $15.95 plus tax for each guest above one year old.
