Pajama Program Opens New Reading Center in Atlanta

First Lady of Georgia Sandra Deal Kicks Off Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

By Pajama Program June 22, 2017

Pajama Program is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its new Atlanta, Georgia Reading Center. This new Atlanta-based Reading Center will be the fourth location to open and the first outside of the New York/New Jersey areas. To commemorate the event, an official ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 13 at the center’s location, 475C Bill Kennedy Way, Atlanta, GA 30316. Reading advocate and First Lady of Georgia Sandra Deal cut the ribbon alongside Pajama Program’s founder Genevieve Piturro and Michael D. Casey, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Carter’s Inc. Highlights from the event included: a special storytime reading with Mrs. Deal, Reading Center dedication with Michael D. Casey, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Carter’s Inc. and a surprise guest appearance and inspirational message from former NFL player and Actor Sergio Joachim. To celebrate the opening, guests enjoyed sweet treats from King of Pops and a beautiful custom cake from Baker’s Man featuring a book with the Atlanta skyline.

Proud sponsors of the Pajama Program Reading Center in Atlanta include: Carter’s, Inc., Scholastic, Target, The Ganek Foundation, The Elf on the Shelf, The Atlanta Woman’s Club Education Committee, Mannington Flooring, Caleb Onsite Wood Work, Pinniger Family, Baker’s Man, and U.S. Electric Supply

Led by a dedicated staff and volunteers, the Atlanta Reading Center will offer a variety of programming for children from preschool through high school. Younger children will enjoy the popular Reading Parties, where they are paired with an adult volunteer to spend an hour reading together. This is a time of unconditional love and individual attention from a caring adult. Following a healthy snack at the end of the hour, the Center holds a small ceremony where each child is presented with a pre-selected new pair of pajamas tied in ribbon with their name. Showered with applause, the child feels special. Before leaving, each child is invited to select the gift of a new book to take home. Through these connections, the children are better able to express themselves and their feelings. Reading is at the core of every program Pajama Program offers, encouraging creativity and self-expression.

“Often, these pajamas and books are the first new things these children have ever received,” says Pajama Program’s founder and executive director, Genevieve Piturro. “They leave the Reading Center with gifts to help transform their reality: new pajamas keep them warm and feeling cared for, and a storybook serves to open their imaginations at bedtime that night, and every night to come. We are so grateful to Carter's for welcoming us to Atlanta and for their team's creative and logistical leadership.”
