Georgia’s most visited attraction offers plenty of space and a few tips for enjoying a meal with family and friends outdoors
Venturing outside to enjoy some healthy, home cooked food is the perfect way to relax without breaking the budget. But with a beautiful weekend weather forecast, Georgians don’t need to wait until National Picnic Day on Tuesday, April 23 this year to enjoy dining in a setting that is just as beautiful as the food. Stone Mountain Park offers hundreds of picnic tables, grills and beautiful outdoor space where park visitors can unplug, relax and share their favorite foods with family and friends.
Everyone has their own picnic traditions and the food choices are as different as the people serving them. But if you’re headed to Georgia’s most visited attraction this weekend, here are a few quick tips and tricks to make your picnic go smoothly.
- Stone Mountain Park offers two large picnic areas on a first come, first served basis and a maximum of six tables can be used by a single group. Both are wheelchair accessible. Check the park map to scout out your options ahead of time.
- Remember, the idea of the picnic is to enjoy each other’s company surrounded by the beauty of nature. If you choose to bring music, please ensure sound systems cannot be heard beyond 50 feet. Park noise ordinance is enforced by park police.
- Public grills are available to share and private grills are allowed in picnic areas only. Help protect Georgia’s beautiful natural resources and always ensure coals are extinguished and disposed of in nearby bins (not trash cans!)
- It’s not a picnic without a few ants they say. So be aware of your surroundings and never feed wildlife. Ants, in particular, have a way of alerting their friends very quickly about your fallen hamburger bun or spilled baked beans. For your own sake and the picnics that will follow yours, please keep your area tidy.
- No one likes to leave the picnic early. Keep everyone happy and healthy by preparing for minor emergencies. Pack a small first aid kit in your picnic basket and make sure everyone in your party applies sunscreen often.
- Access to Stone Mountain Park’s two large picnic areas is included with a daily parking pass ($20) or a yearly pass ($40) that provides unlimited visits for 12 months. Purchase your parking pass at the gate or online at stonemountainpark.com.
- If you are planning a large get together like a family reunion or office outing, consider reserving a pavilion. Stone Mountain Park has options that can accommodate groups of 50 to 10,000. The park can even do the cooking for you. Call 770-498-5636 to reserve.
- If you’d like to get the jump on National Picnic Day this Saturday, stick around for The Lasershow Spectacular in Mountainvision starting at 9:00 p.m.
