Decorating guide to deck the halls this holiday season

By Pike Nurseries December 11, 2019

Tis the season to be jolly -- and to decorate for the holidays! The merriest time of year is here, and the experts at Pike Nurseries can help customers choose the perfect live décor for each space, while providing tips to keep it fresh throughout the New Year! From wreaths to poinsettias to garland, the garden center offers fresh and fragrant greenery to add the perfect finishing touch!

Donning fresh wreaths on the front door, windows or mirrors is the perfect accessory to brighten the home with holiday cheer. Wreaths can also make great centerpieces; simply lay flat on a table and place flameless candles, vases and ornaments in the opening. Pike Nurseries offers a variety of wreaths including:

  • Mixed Wreath: A traditional selection with a combination of fir, cedar and juniper with pine cones.
  • Noble Fir Wreath: Simple, yet elegant, this bluish-green variety is created from lightly fragrant Noble Fir branches.
  • Boxwood Wreath: A contemporary, eye-catching choice. The tiny, bright green boxwood foliage is beautiful on its own or adorn the wreath with a large, colorful bow for a simple, bold wreath.
  • Door Greeter: Greet guests with the unexpected. A simple door charm featuring a cluster of evergreen boughs like fir and holly is a new take on the classic wreath.
  • Mailbox Wreath: A pre-formed arch topped with classic Christmas greenery that sits right on the mailbox is an easy way to bring a touch of Christmas from the front door all the way down to the street.

Poinsettias, the most widely recognized Christmas flower, come in a variety of colors to bring extra pizzazz to indoor spaces. The low-maintenance Christmas staple only needs water when the soil becomes dry to the touch and prefers temperatures of 60-70 degrees.  The experts advise watering poinsettias at the soil rather than over the blooms! The most popular poinsettias at Pike Nurseries include:

  • Traditional Red: A classic and certainly most popular choice for the holidays. Try red varieties like Christmas Season® Red with slightly elongated crimson bracts that have a multi-layered look, or Tapestry featuring bright red bracts accented by two-tone green and yellow leaves.
  • Red Glitter: The large red bracts on this variety are speckled with flecks of cream that look like a light dusting of snow. A festive, energetic look!
  • Ice Crystals: For a more playful look, these poinsettias are cream-colored in the middle and shimmer to a peppermint pink on the edges of the teardrop-shaped bracts.
  • Marble: Bi-colored bracts feature creamy ivory edges that deepen to soft pink centers with a watercolor effect. A subtle but eye-catching variety!
  • Princettia® Pure White: A compact poinsettia with smaller, slightly elongated bracts in a clean, true white.  The tight clusters of bracts ensure the plant is fully covered in color that complements any décor style!
  • Princettia® Pink: Choose a soft pink or vivid hot pink poinsettia for a unique accent for the holiday. A great choice to go with colorful lights and decorations or let the unexpected color pop against neutral décor like a snow-flocked tree and craft paper wrapped presents.
Accent your poinsettias and other décor with other indoor blooming plants:

  • Christmas Cactus: A beautiful blooming succulent with green draping foliage and blooms in red, pink or white that appear to drip off the plant. Their long bloom time makes a festive, exotic touch well into the new year!
  • Amaryllis: A surefire source of vibrant color, these tall, tropical, trumpet-shaped blooms add a scintillating accent to any home, making them the perfect holiday decor.
  • Orchids: For a touch of elegance, add these delicate blooms to Christmas décor. Display alone or in a mixed container garden for a real “wow” factor. They make stunning hostess gifts, too!
  • Florist Hydrangeas: The big, rounded flower clusters that we love in spring landscapes in a small, giftable size. The greenish-white globes of flowers can be added to bouquets and centerpieces or displayed alone for a chic and polished look for the holidays!

Decking the halls with garland is a fresh and vibrant way to spruce up space! Add colorful accessories such as small ornaments, twinkling lights, pine cones and berries for a look that complements accents in the home. There are endless possibilities for a garland that includes draping along a mantel, wrapping around porch columns, and more!  The most popular types of garland include:

  • Cedar Garland: Relatively flat and flexible, this garland is perfect for laying on flat surfaces and creating swags. The experts recommend draping this along the mantel for a classic Christmas look.
  • Mixed Garland: This garland incorporates blue juniper berries for interest. It lays flat like traditional and timeless cedar garland but is fuller.
  • White Pine Garland: A thin, pliant roping of rustic pine that easily wraps around columns, stair rails, mailboxes, and more. An economical option for large areas like long fence lines.
