Our Favorite Resources for Staying Home + Staying Happy

By Swell Forever March 20, 2020

By now there are a million lists and ideas for how to cope being home with kids during this rare event in our lives. Just a week into the school being out, here are a few favorite things we have tried or discovered that you may enjoy as well!

  1. GoNoodle on YouTube! If you have not discovered this and you have kids on the younger end of the spectrum (ours are 6 and 3.5), you need to fast track your way to watch these dance and movement videos on Youtube. From Frozen themes to hip hop, the videos are clever and make for a great inside dance party/recess.
  2. Cosmic Yoga Yoga meets imaginative kid's stories and parents can join too. When my kids wore out, I enjoyed getting my yoga and stretching in for the day! You can also find this on Youtube or do a google search. The Frozen episode is pretty epic.
  3. Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt. My kids loved this. We live in a community near a park so I hid clues throughout and had a treasure box at the end.
  4. Zoo Webcams and Animal Videos - We discovered Fiona the hippo from the Cincinnati Zoo's Facebook page and my girls loved watching her videos and learning about hippos. The Zoo Atlanta also has a Panda cam. By the time you search all the resources available through various Zoos, you can have quite the educational experience and fun too.
  5. Making Care Packages and Sending Surprise Mail. My kids love to put gifts together for people and send mail to friends. Find addresses of classmates and start a penpal partnership. We are working on a few kid-centric care packages as well.
  6. Supporting Local Friends + Family Just like everyone else we anticipate significant changes to our business and are working hard to keep our team busy. For some professionals such as hairstylists, retail workers, caterers, wedding professionals, fitness trainers, tourism specialists, vacation homeowners/companies, etc. the ability to work will be drastically limited in the coming weeks and months. Please consider buying gift certificates for favorite restaurants and stores, your nail or hair salon, children and adult coaches/camps, etc. to help ease the lack of cash flow that will surely continue across our country as more communities practice physical distancing.
Here are some local friends of ours in Atlanta that could use support: Hippo Hopp, Catch Air and Ready Set Fun often offer gift cards. Buy one for your family and buy one for a friend!
Local children's art-house, La Dee Da, in Sandy Springs is offering pick up arts and crafts kits while art classes are canceled.
Memberships to places like our Zoo Atlanta,Children's Museum of Atlanta, Center For Puppetry Arts, Atlanta Botanical Gardens etc. will also help cash flow of the amazing resources in our community. Ask grandparents to shop early for birthdays and holidays.
  7. Restaurants and Stores. Many others could use your delivery and pick up orders! Many are willing to bring your purchases to your car. Just call and ask! Or go ahead and get your holiday gifting done by buying gift cards. Go visit the list Sandy Springs Dunwoody Macaroni Kid put together.
  8. When it comes to camps, vacations, etc. if you can do it financially please consider asking for credits to reschedule trips or attend different camps or events such as pre-planned birthday parties!
  9. If someone cleans your house and you are not comfortable with guests inside, consider sharing their holiday bonus early to help them through.
  10. Next time you get a moment to yourself, consider writing a list of the most helpful and important people and places in your life and commit to doing something that will help them in this time of crisis, even if you are facing a crisis too!
