Savor summertime with garden-to-grill tips from Pike Nurseries.

Gear up for the summer growing season with victory gardens

By Pike Nurseries June 4, 2020

Growing produce is a simple way for beginner gardeners to start playing in the dirt! There’s no better time than summer for aspiring green thumbs to learn the basics of planting warm-weather vegetables and herbs. Pike Nurseries offers expert advice to kick-start modern-day victory gardens this summer – sure to take barbecues to the next level with homegrown, nutritious and delicious benefits. The garden center experts dish out the best Do-It-Yourself projects, plus some growing tips to ensure bountiful, homegrown goodness.

Vegetables and herbs can thrive in limited space, making them ideal for growing in raised beds, patio planters and more. Gardeners can even sneak a few of their favorite vegetables and herbs into their floral container gardens to maximize their use!

The experts recommend finding a spot that receives full or afternoon sun (at least six hours per day), or gardeners can consider planting in moveable containers to meet the required sun exposure. An amended, nutrient-rich soil is essential for vegetables and herbs to thrive and establish healthy root systems. If planting in the ground, amend native soil with a 50/50 ratio with Pike Vegetable & Flower Mix. If planting in a container, use a high-quality potting mix such as Pike Potting & Container Soil. Be sure to water thoroughly right after planting and continue to water on a consistent schedule once established, keeping the soil cool and slightly damp to the touch. Pike Nurseries recommends feeding the plants once a month in spring and summer with an organic vegetable fertilizer, such as Dr. Earth Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer to keep them thriving!
