DeKalb County Public Library Summer Reading Challenge & Beanstack

By DeKalb County Public Library June 1, 2020

Due to Covid-19 many library systems around the country are closed to the public. However, to promote and encourage everyone to continue reading, participate in learning and literacy activities and attend virtual library programs, the annual Summer Reading Program will take place in our public libraries. This year with funding from the Georgia Public Library Service, DeKalb County Public Library will use the Beanstack by Zoobean software to create reading challenges, register patrons for challenges in which they can log books that are read, and track reading time.  Beanstack will also allow us to manage the end of challenge raffles and have access to a variety of reports to better gauge how many participated in challenges, minutes/hours read, which school had the highest number of participants and so much more.

Beanstack not only manages Summer Reading but we also can create challenges at any time of the year:

  • Fall/Spring Challenge, All DeKalb Reads Challenge, Black History Month Challenge, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten; the sky is the limit!
  • Therefore, no more Summer Reading Program at DeKalb County Public Library. It’s now the Summer Reading Challenge.

Beanstack is for all ages 0 to 100+ and is based on a badge reward system. Badges are awarded for reading and for participation in activities and library program attendance (all virtual this year).

Why the Challenge Matters

Children have been away from the traditional learning environment (school) since the middle of March. When or if they return in the fall, they can potentially lose up to three months or more of reading ability. Now more than ever, reading and participating in learning activities during the summer break is important. DeKalb County Public Library is here for you!

How to Get Started

We encourage everyone to participate in Imagine Your Story, the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge theme. Register for Beanstack and start collecting badges today!
