What you need:
- 2 cups flour (1 1/2 cups to mix and another half while rolling out the dough)
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 cup of warm water
- Glitter Glue in red, white and blue
- Crayons in red, white and blue
- Paints in red, white and blue
- Sharpie Markers in red, white and blue
- Chalk in red, white and blue
- Q-Tips for the paints
- Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters
- Parchment Paper in a Glass or Ceramic Dish (NOT METAL)
- Magnets with adhesive
- Sealer like Mod Podge
Step 1: Mix up your 1 1/2 cups flour with 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup of warm water. I used a mixer until it was smooth and mixed well.
Step 2: If the dough is too sticky, add more flour.
Step 3: Separate the dough into 3 balls
Step 4: Each ball add a different color of glitter glue. I added a 1/2 tablespoon of glitter glue to each ball. It will make it very sticky and I added flour until the ball was smooth and not super sticky.
Step 5: Using the rolling pin, cookie cutters, jar lids or whatever else the kids want to try, cut out shapes and transfer to a glass pan lined with parchment paper.
- Tips: Kids may shape dough into whatever they like. We made a USA sign and some flag shapes.
Step 6: It is time to bake it. There are two ways to do this. One is slow in the oven and another is fast in the microwave. We used the microwave.
- Bake for two to three hours, until completely dry in the Oven set at 250 Degrees OR
- Set Pan in Microwave and set it for 10 seconds at full power. You will want to do this until they get puffy and start to harden and get brown on the bottom. This took me approximately 30 minutes and I set it for 10-20 seconds each time. Never go more than 20 seconds at a time.
Step 7: Once the shapes have dried, get out the paint, crayons, chalk, Sharpie's and start decorating. (Paint was the best options, and the Sharpie's were our 2nd favorite.)
Step 8: To preserve the magnets, add two to three coats of sealer on top of the paint once it’s completely dry.
Step 9: Once the paint and sealer have dried, attach a magnet to the back of each shape.
