Red, White, and Blue at the Zoo

Zoo Atlanta salutes members of the Armed Forces with admission discounts on July 4

By Zoo Atlanta July 2, 2019

Fourth of July at Zoo Atlanta favorites include Splash Fountain presented by Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority, a water play area featuring 18 jets on a 2,500 square-foot section of the KIDZone. Adventurers are encouraged to try a trek on Treetop Trail presented by Kaiser Permanente. The aerial playground includes more than 20 challenge elements culminating in the SkyRail zipline.

Explore the inner worlds of the climate-controlled Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience. Celebrate wildlife native to North America in the complex’s Georgia eXtremes zone. Visit the Georgia River for underwater views of native turtles and fish.

Sequoyah the bald eagle: Visit an American icon, Sequoyah the bald eagle. Bald eagles like Sequoyah are typically brought to rehabilitation centers for injuries caused by cars, power lines and hunting. The species is federally protected, and all releasable bald eagles are required by law to be returned to the wild. Sequoyah, who came to Zoo Atlanta from a rehabilitation center in 2015, is not a candidate for re-release because of a permanent wing injury.

Named the national bird of the U.S. in 1782 and found only in North America, the bald eagle is an American conservation success story. Driven to the brink of extinction in the 20th century, the species was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2007 but remains protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and state laws.
