City Springs Theatre Company Ragtime: The Musical March 14-30, 2025

February 27, 2025

As part of its 2024 – 2025 PNC Season, City Springs Theatre Company (CSTC) brings the timeless, modern classic Ragtime: The Musical to the Byers Theatre stage from March 14 – 30, at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center.

Nationally recognized for its deep trove of talent and impressive production designs, City Springs Theatre Company brings to the stage the pageantry, emotion and resounding hope that abounds in the 1998’s Ragtime: The Musical. Based on the best-selling 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, Ragtime is set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York City, weaving together the stories of three distinctly American families, each in search of the American dream. Like the novel, the musical is historical fiction, with the story’s fictional characters interacting with real-life persons such as Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman and Booker T. Washington.

Ragtime: The Musical is often called the last great musical of the 20th century,” said Natalie DeLancey, executive director of City Springs Theatre Company. “While the musical is decidedly contemporary, it’s very reflective of classic, grand, musical dramas like South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Not only is it the biggest show we’ve produced, but it’s a very delicate one that requires a great deal of respect and empathy from every artist involved.”

The Tony®-winning stage adaptation of Doctorow’s book was written by the accomplished playwright Terrence McNally, with music by the team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the composers of the hit musicals Seussical, Once On This Island and Anastasia. The City Springs Theatre Company production will be directed and choreographed by New York-based Todd L. Underwood.

The cast of Ragtime: The Musical is led by Jonathan Christopher as Coalhouse Walker Jr., Kristine Reese as Mother, and Jordan Sam Rich as Tateh. Christopher appeared in the recent Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd. Reese appeared in Les Miserables on Broadway and has appeared in a number of memorable roles for City Springs Theatre Company, including the shows Monty Python’s Spamalot and South Pacific. Rich has appeared in CSTC’s Jersey Boys and The Music Man.

Making their returns to the CSTC stage are Max Gukhman as Father, Corey Bryant as Younger Brother, Haley Byrd as The Little Girl, Grace Arnold Hogan as Evelyn Nesbit, Chris Damiano as Grandfather, Megan K. Hill as Emma Goldman, Bob Adams as J.P. Morgan, Timothy Ellis as Henry Ford, as well as ensemble members Alec Beard, Claudio Pestana, Kyle Robert Carter, Arielle Rider and Zac Pritts. Making their CSTC debuts are Kyla Bolling as Sarah, Nolan Waters as The Little Boy, Steven Mooney as Harry Houdini, Monté J. Howell as Booker T. Washington, Latrice Pace as Sarah’s Friend, and ensemble members Sarah Brinson, Lalo Cavali, Avanni Cherie, Naomi Green, Jillian Melko, Leah Elm Meier, Cedric J. Paige, Wesley Tunison, and Diego Turner-Figueredo.
