Fireworks and Autism

By The Autism Diva July 2, 2019

The biggest part of the fun of the July 4th celebration is the fireworks, especially for kids.  But for some children and even adults, it can be an overwhelming and painful experience. The noise and even the lights that fireworks emit even when far away, can sound like it’s right next to them and even cause a fight or flight response.

Here are a few tips to help a loved one on the spectrum cope:

  • If your child does like to watch, try noise-canceling headphones and/or sunglasses.
  • Have a plan in place should your child need to leave or needs a safe place to retreat.
  • Some families use prerecorded videos and stories to help prepare their child ahead.
  • Even if staying home, be aware of how loud the sounds are to your loved one.  Windows may need to be closed and consider background/white noise to help relax and drown out the fireworks.
